5 New Podcasts I’m Listening to About Food

It’s funny how a year or so can pass and the landscape of podcasts completely changes.

I’d like to say that I’ve had a hand in advising some of the podcasts mentioned below and I am so happy to do so. It’s amazing to see these people grow. Though My Food Job Rocks is a general podcast about food industry jobs, the ones listed below have a bit of a different focus. If you’re looking for some new podcasts to listen to,  then here you go!

Food Heroes Podcast by Katie Jones

Long time friend Katie Jones joined the podcast journey by focusing on businesses that have a philanthropic edge to them. What’s great about the podcast is that you have a mix of people who are and are not the face of the company, and in my opinion, the impact of media and community engagement is just as important as who’s in charge.

I’d recommend the episode with Kim Chackal, we also interviewed her on My Food Job Rocks on the importance of Fair Trade.

Cultured Meat and Future Food Podcast with Alex Shirazi

Someone sent me a link to Alex Shirazi’s interview with Lisa Feria and I enjoyed it. I reached out to Alex because I liked how he was doing a podcast on this very important topic and wanted to help him in any way I could. After all, I am just one person doing one podcast, we need more people to talk about stuff like this!

Alex has impressed me with his lineup of guests. Him getting the CEO’s of the top brass clean meat companies makes me so glad he’s taking on this podcast.

What’s even better is that Alex Shirazi is predominantly in tech and his new, obsessive interest in food innovation has been enlightening to me.

I support Alex a lot, speaking at his events and trying to go to as many of the events he sets up has been really fun. If you are in the Bay Area, check out his monthly meetups. They’re really fun, and being involved ina  community of passionate food technologists is really refreshing.

I’m going to this one next week.

Baked In Science by Lin Carson’s Bakerpedia team

If your interest is in baking, check out our sponsor, Bakerpedia’s podcast, Baked In Science. Lin Carson interviews guests with a specific knowledge base to help you in your baking journey. From gluten-free to the use in enzymes, if you are interested in improving your baking skills or want to learn more about the baking industry, check out Bakerpedia’s podcast, which can be found here.

Business for Good by Paul Shapiro and Toni Okamoto

Paul Shapiro and his girlfriend Toni Okamoto just started a podcast and I had the pleasure of listening to their first episodes before they publish. These guys are very connected in the industry and have great guests right off the bat with John Mackey from Whole Foods and Seth Goldman from Beyond Meat. Though not entirely a food podcast, both Paul and Toni are well connected in the space, so expect a majority of their guests to be food.

The podcast focuses on leaders from well-known and niche businesses and they ask questions revolving around the successes, and risks associated with creating a business and extract advice on how you can create a business that is impactful.

This is their first week launching their podcast and I’m excited on what’s to come.

How I Built This hosted by Guy Raz

About 20% of their podcasts are food related and it’s a very professional podcast. I particularly enjoyed the Larabar, Ben and Jerry’s, Beyond Meat, and Cliff Bar episodes.

As a professional podcast, the way Guy Raz asks questions is very professional and I’d say some of my style resonates with that.

Through listening to the food episodes, I can’t really follow a common theme to the episodes, but I do notice that Guy likes to get into the weeds and focuses on emphasizing how the founder feels when dealing with a crisis. For example, I had no idea that Lara from Larabar had to switch the name from Mannabar to Larabar days before production, or that Ben and Jerry’s founders were really debating on buying the space that set them for success.

BONUS – Akimbo

Though not a food podcast, I have been enjoying Seth Godin’s newest podcast, Akimbo. Seth Godin is probably one of the wisest modern marketers I’ve ever met and because I listen to career advice podcasts, his name pops up often. I will always listen to either him or Ryan Holiday on podcasts. I think they are our modern day philosophers.

So Akimbo is unique in that it’s a solo podcast, episodes are two-parters. A 15 minute, provocative blurb about an uncommon, but noticeable part of society, and a Q and A session. I also love that he abandoned his ad with Zip Recruiter (a company I find extremely annoying), and ended up giving a shout out to a nonprofit every episode.

Each episode ends up with something to take away from. I’m terrible at explaining this podcast, but as a  foodie, I would recommend the episode, this stinks.
